In today’s age of holistic medicine and toxic cleansing, many individuals are looking into the benefits of fasting.
A solid fast, which includes refraining from foods that your body has to work to digest, is gaining in popularity.
Why Do We Fast?
Throughout Biblical history, fasting has been encouraged for spiritual empowerment. Most individuals who fast, report elevated spiritual clarity, and the ability to connect with God on a deeper level.
Although fasting is not a requirement in the New Testament, fasting is known for its health benefits, as well as its ability to help you stop, regroup, and find your spiritual place in this world. Fasting can help individuals temper their desires and gain mental clarity.
Do you need to hear from God? Do you feel clouded in your thinking and your spiritual clarity? Fasting may be the answer for you.
How to Fast
According to the New Testament, Matthew 6:16 -18 clearly instructs us to fast secretly, or at least not to boast about it: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you openly.”
So, fasting is connected with prayer and the answer to our prayers. In reality, fasting can bring us closer to God and the spiritual realm as we deny our flesh and feed our spirits.
When fasting, reading and meditating on the word is key.
What if I Fail?
The enemy is quick to bring up our list of failures. If you fast and fail, don’t worry. If you were able to refrain from your fleshly desires for even a short amount of time, it has enabled you to touch base with God on a deeper level.
The desire of the enemy is to accuse of us failing, tell us that we are to weak to accomplish anything, and to encourage us to cheat or fail in our fasting attempts.
Disarming the enemy has everything to do with “not worrying about failure.” If you cheat, so what? You can always start over in a couple of days. Stay with it until you accomplish the deeper level of spiritual connection that you are after.
Step by Step Fasting Advice
A true fast is not something to play with. If you don’t fast correctly, your body will suffer from your attempt. Here are tips to a safe, healthy fast:
- Day Prior to Fast: On the day before your fast, try to refrain from meats and hard-to-digest foods. Do you have a blender? Pureed vegetable or fruit juice mixed with water and lemon juice are your best bet.
- Day of the Fast: The first day of your fast should include watered down fruit juice and chicken broth.
- Day Two of the Fast: If you’ve gone on to day two, congratulations. Day two should consist of meditating on the word, broth and purified water.
- Day Three of the Fast: If this is your first fast, continue meditating on the Word of God, but consider ending your fast tomorrow. Three days of a fast should bring you much closer to God and offer a level of mental clarity that you’ve never known.
Coming off Your Fast
When you are ready to end your fast, be sure to come back off in the same manner that you began. Drink broth, eat fresh fruits and vegetables and refrain from meats or hard to digest foods.
As you come-off-of, or put an end to your fast, be careful not to overload your digestive system with meats and starch. Ease back into your normal eating routine.
Fasting has proven physical and digestive benefits, as well as increasing spiritual awareness. If you have never taken part in a fast, maybe the time is now. Just be sure to go easy on your body and meditate on the Word of God throughout the length of your fast.
Enjoy the benefits of fasting. You’ll be glad did. If you’ve tried fasting, please share your experience in our comments section.
